How to find work experience in Transition Year
Finding a placement is easier when you know your dates, check what is actually accepting applications, and follow the organisation’s own instructions. Use this short checklist before you apply.
Browse source-checked TY opportunities →1. Check your school dates first
Write down the exact week or days your school allows for work experience. Some programmes only accept students for one fixed set of dates, while others arrange dates individually. Ask your school what forms, insurance documents, permissions, and deadlines apply before you commit.
2. Read the status carefully
A listing marked open means the organisation’s page currently describes an application route. It does not guarantee that places remain. A waitlist may depend on your school or eligibility. Next means a future application or interest window. Full or closed means that round is not accepting applications.
TY Window links each listing to the organisation’s page. Check that source before preparing documents or sharing personal details. If a date or place count is unclear, treat it as unconfirmed.
3. Prepare a simple application
- Follow the organisation’s own instructions and use its application form or email address.
- If asked for a CV, keep it short and truthful. Include school activities, interests, responsibilities, and skills that relate to the placement.
- If asked for a cover letter, explain why that particular opportunity interests you and what you hope to learn.
- Check spelling, dates, file names, and attachments before sending anything. Ask a parent/guardian or teacher to review a form if you are unsure.
- Keep a note of when you applied and when it is reasonable to follow up. Do not send repeated messages.
4. Keep personal information safe
TY Window does not ask you to create an account or submit an application. Its saved plan stays in your browser. An organisation may need details to process an application; use only the official link, read the form, and involve a parent/guardian or school when appropriate.
Quick questions
Does “open” mean I will get a place?
No. It means the source page describes an application route. The organisation decides eligibility and availability, and popular programmes can fill.
Can I apply before checking with school?
Check your school’s dates and requirements first. Some organisations need a school insurance letter or coordinator details.
Are TY Window listings automatically updated?
No. The listings are checked manually and show a check date. Always use the official source for the latest instructions.
Where do I find opportunities?
Start with the finder, choose a status or interest, compare fixed dates with your school week, and open the organisation’s source page.
